Emergency Protective Orders

If you have been threatened or assaulted, you should obtain an emergency protective order as soon as possible. This is a temporary order that lasts for 72 hours. You are able to petition for a preliminary protective order during this period.

An emergency protective order may legally order your offender to cease all threatening or abusive behavior. Specifically, it can prohibit the offender from contacting you at home, work, or via phone. And, this order can have him or her removed from your shared residence. This order will provide any other assistance needed to protect you and your family from harm.

Full Protective Orders

In addition to the benefits of an emergency order, a full protective order goes a step further. The full protective order lasts two years and also handles domestic issues for two parties who live together. A full protective order can grant temporary custody and/or visitation rights of any children. It can also force the abuser to cover expenses for you and your children to live in a separate residence. Possession of a jointly owned home or vehicle is generally granted to the party filing the order. The full protective order can also require treatment or counseling for the abuser.
